KAP Founders

Amy and Ella founded Kids Against Plastic when they were 11 and 9 respectively. Now 21 and 19, they are getting on a bit, and although they are not still kids themselves, the KAP Development Team they work with ensures the charity remains child/young person-led.

Let’s find out a bit more about them:

Amy

I’m 20 years old and have been an environmental campaigner since the age of 12, when I started the educational charity Kids Against Plastic with my younger sister. Since its founding, Kids Against Plastic has engaged a team of over 280 young people around the world as part of the KAP Club, and our Plastic Clever scheme has had over 1800 schools and numerous cafes and businesses sign up since its launch in early 2019. Plus, we’ve collected over 100,000 pieces of plastic litter along the way and developed an app to log it.

Through my work, I’ve have spoken to kids around the UK, ministers in all three Parliaments in Great Britain, business conferences internationally from Seoul to Barcelona, and diplomats and young people at the UN Headquarters in Geneva. I’m also a two-time TEDx speaker, speaking firstly at TEDx Exeter alongside my sister in 2018, and most recently at TEDx Geneva 2021.

For our work, my sister and I have been recognised with the Prime Minister’s Points of Light Award, the Pride of Britain 2021 Green Champion Award, and a British Empire Medal (BEM).

Alongside our charity, I’m a keen writer, with my books Be Plastic Clever and Be Climate Clever published by DK in 2020 and 2022 respectively.

Ella

Ella is 19 and has been keen to protect the planet since she was just 10 years old. As a young person herself she sees the huge value and potential of other young environmentalists when sharing their voices and ideas.

She is a big animal lover and passionate about ensuring the natural world can be protected before more damage is done. Her 8 year activism journey has taught her so much about what can be achieved despite barriers like age, and she wants to share these benefits with others to encourage more people to get involve in these issues.

Amy and Ella's Legacy

Youth Empowerment is the key!

Amy and Ella are passionate about ensuring KAP remains a charity led by young people, for young people.

They strive to achieve this by putting the growth and development of the KAP members at the heart of everything they do.

The KAP Development Team

The KAP Development Team is made up of members that show high levels of commitment and engagement. Naturally, these are usually the ‘older’ members who have been attending KAP Connects and engaging in activities and opportunities.

KAP Connect

The Development Team take part in the planning and running of KAP Connect meetings. They host the meetings and design and present engaging educational activities for the other members to enjoy.

Speaking Opportunities

Where possible, Amy and Ella like to give the KAP Members opportunities to speak alongside them so as to help them develop their speaking skills.

KAP Members' Area

The Development Team have opportunities to get involved with the smooth running of the KAP Members’ community website.
