PLANET FRIENDLY MISSIONS

Designed to be simple, adaptable and pupil-led, so schools can take action without adding pressure to the school week.

Autumn 1

🌍 Welcome to Planet Friendly Missions

Thank you for registering your interest in Planet Friendly Missions.

Planet Friendly Missions is a free school action programme from Kids Against Plastic. It gives pupils a clear way to take positive environmental action in school, without creating a big extra workload for staff.

Each half term, schools choose one mission from three options. The missions are designed so they can work as a class project, Eco Club activity, school council task, lunchtime group, assembly follow-up or whole-school action.

The full Autumn 1 mission materials will be shared before the start of term. For now, this page gives you enough information to plan ahead and decide how PFM could fit into your school.

🗓️ Themes across the year

Each half term has one main theme. Schools choose one mission from three options linked to that theme.

You do not need to complete all three. Choose the mission that best fits your pupils, your school priorities and the time you have available.

🍂 Autumn 1

Our School Environment

Litter and our school

Waste and Recycling

Improving school grounds

🗑️ Mission 1: Litter and Our School

Pupils investigate litter in and around the school site, identify problem areas and take action to reduce it.

Best for: schools wanting a quick, visible action project.

♻️ Mission 2: Waste and Recycling

Pupils look at how waste is managed in school and explore ways to reduce, reuse or recycle more effectively.

Best for: schools wanting to improve everyday systems and pupil habits.

🌻 Mission 3: Improving School Grounds

Pupils identify a part of the school grounds that could be improved for people, wildlife or wellbeing.

Best for: schools wanting a practical project linked to outdoor space, nature or school pride.

How Planet Friendly Missions works

Each mission follows the same simple structure:

🎯 Choose
Schools pick one mission for the half term.

🔍 Find Out
Pupils explore the issue in their own school.

🧠 Understand
Pupils think about why it matters and who it affects.

🙌 Act
Pupils carry out a practical action.

📸 Show
Pupils collect simple evidence of what they did.

📤 Submit
Schools upload a short update so KAP can recognise  the action.

Evidence can be simple: photo, pupil quote, short written update or before-and-after example is enough.

What to do before September

You do not need to start the missions yet. For now, use this page to think about how Planet Friendly Missions could fit into your school.

👧 Choose who might lead

This could be a class teacher, Eco Club lead, school council lead, geography lead, science lead, PSHE lead or a pupil leadership group. PFM works best when pupils help shape the action.

🧩 Decide where it fits

PFM can work through curriculum time, Eco Club, school council, tutor time, assemblies, enrichment or a whole-school focus.

🏫 Look at your school environment

Think about which Autumn 1 mission feels most useful for your school: litter, waste and recycling, or improving school grounds.

📸 Keep evidence simple

Photos, pupil quotes, signs, posters, litter counts, waste checks or short updates can all help show what has changed

The full Autumn 1 materials will give you the mission guidance, activity ideas and evidence steps. You do not need to create the project from scratch.

What happens next?

Interested schools will be able to access the full Autumn 1 materials before the start of term.

These will include teacher guidance, pupil activities, evidence guidance and simple instructions for sharing your school’s action with KAP.

For now, the best next step is to choose who might lead PFM in your school and think about which Autumn 1 mission could be the best starting point.
