KAPtat

A campaign to ban plastic tat from children’s comics and magazines.

KAPtat Update

KAPtat campaign takes a shift in focus.

Following productive meetings with two of the UK’s leading supermarkets, the KAP Team of Amy, Ella, Inaaya and Lucie have joined an exciting Environment Roundtable involving leading comic and magazine publishers, play experts and others interested in how to make the comics and magazines sold in supermarkets as environmentally sustainable as possible.

The KAP Team will provide a very critical eye (from a youth perspective) and hold the publishers to account.

It’s a great opportunity for the KAP Charity to keep pressure on to bring about positive change in the comic/magazines sector, albeit it in a different way to direct action against the supermarkets.

So what is the #KAPtat Campaign?

Amy, Ella and Skye explaining what the KAPtat campaign is all about

KAPtat is short for Kids Against Plastic tat, with tat being the pointless throwaway plastic toys that magazine publishers add to their comics and magazines.

Not only are the toys themselves pretty rubbish – hence the term ‘tat’ – they are made from cheap plastics that are not commonly recycled and often end up in landfill, incineration or littered in the environment. Due to the significant numbers of comics and magazines sold – and therefore tat produced (from oil) – they also impact on the climate crisis.

Skye Neville, is leading the fight against plastic tat, and Kids Against Plastic are proud to be supporting her.

Why bother with about plastic tat?

It’s sometimes tempting to think, ‘Why bother?’, when it comes to environmental action. I mean, what difference will reducing un-necessary plastic make?
